Oahu - Friday Jan 31

Friday - Jan 31:

A relaxing morning then on the road to the Dole Plantation.  As we passed Haleiwa, I snapped a photo of the Wyland Art Gallery advertising a showing of Heather Brown art.  She is the artist who did the cover art on the Island Style Ukulele CD that we bought a couple of days ago.  Might have to check it out closer the next time we pass.

The Dole Plantation is located on a 2-lane hiway.  Quite crowded and reminded us a lot of the old Nut Tree in Vacaville.  We walked around the grounds and gift shop, viewed the huge Maze and I bought a pineapple ice cream cone - really good.  We think the LDS church that manages the Polynesian Center may be funneling low cost, excess student labor from the adjacent BYU campus not needed to work the Center down to the Dole Plantation. The vibe is similar. Google the Dole family and you soon find a detailed family tree. Hmmmm. Anyway, they did have some cute T-shirts (I took a couple of photos) and Xmas ornaments (more photos.....I might make some of these for next Xmas):

Next we decided to drive around to the West side of Oahu.  On the way, we stopped at Walmart to buy a couple of boogie boards, water shoes, and a few supplies.

It was already after 4pm so rush hour was starting ... and the rain started up ... I had to take a photo of this sign to show even in paradise, they have a rush hour requiring Express Lanes.  We made it up the west coast then decided to turn around and head to the rental car agency to switch out our car.  Thrifty Car Rental iis very "thrifty" and they gave us a car with a slow leak in the right front tire that we had to keep filling up - plus the wiper on the driver's side worked going the down direction...but not very well going back up.   After 6 days it was time for another one.  The switch went well and we now drive a 2013 Ford Focus with all the bells and whistles...not like the basic model they gave us the first time.

We picked up the car and a block away is a Harley Dealer so we had to stop in.   They were holding a free BBQ so it made our day!

Honolulu Harley had some great T-shirts and posters (so more photos):

We were then invited to go upstairs to view the owner's collection of Harley's.  No need to go to Milwaukee...his collection was really something!

This Harley has a lot of astronaut signatures on it (it used to belong to one of them):

This was the view looking down on the bikes from upstairs.  This dealership tops all we've seen!

We returned back to the apartment about 7:30pm - rain off an on all evening.  Time to unpack groceries and have a glass of wine...

This is a CD that we bought at Walmart earlier today (great prices compared to all the tourist stores where we've looked at other CDs).  Our old rental car only had an option for radio or CD.  Our new rental car also has the USB port so we can listen to our IPOD too.
