Sunday - February 9

Sunday - Feb 9:

Linda, Norm and Pam headed off to Starbucks for breakfast while Robert spent the day at a bridge tournament.  We picked up one of Linda's girlfriends, Caroline, and headed off for the day to visit local artisan studios.  Maui Open Studios is only held two weekends of February every year and we were lucky to arrive during this time.  Each studio offered pupus and wine/beer.  Doesn't Norm look happy?

We started at Makai Glass Creations in Makawao (upcountry Maui).

This is the glass artist, Randy Schaffer - we loved the way he made the bubbles & foam:

Some of his pieces, like this turtle, are lit - beautiful at night:

Next we went to The Hui (as the locals call it).  Located just below Makawao town, it is almost 100 years old and one of the last remaining historic properties open to the public.  In 1934, the estate became a non-proft arts education organization.

In the parking area is temporary art structure called "On The Wild Side":

There were about 20 artisans on display -

Linda and Caroline tried on some necklaces from Coleen d'Avignon (d'Avignon Designs):

This is artist Kathleen Alexander (kathleenalexanderwatercolors.com).  Caroline and her husband had beeen to the art show the day before and planned to buy a print of Kathleen's today but it was sold.

We loved the wood pieces that Jim Smith created (www.jimswooodnglass.com) -

This was a headboard that looked like a huge wave so he added a tiny surfer:

This was a jewelry studio but it wasn't open while we were there:

We enjoyed a lunch of pork tacos and beer, wine, or sodas...

We then drove to a house in Makawao to visit a jewelry designer that Linda has purchased from in the past - Mauidivegirl Designs.  I liked her display and business card that has a nautilus on it.  Her card also says "Adorn Yourself With Aloha ...handmade jewelry inspired by the sea".  We are really in sync.

Linda purchased a necklace of lava rocks in a silver chain for $58.  Caroline also purchased a pearl necklace and Pam bought a shell ring.

We liked her display of rings -

Next we headed to another studio of a quilter - Gail Blate:

This piece is in progress.... It is about 5' tall -

We then went to one of Linda's favorite galleries -  Maui Hands:

Loved this nautilus with the stained glass.  The clay fish in front were whimsical too....

Linda bought her Ni'Hou necklace in this store a few months ago along with a silver ring that has a black pearl

We headed back to the condo's clubhouse for margaritas, swimming and to watch the sunset!  What a beautiful location...(this is Linda in the pool)...

And here we are in the pool after the sunset....the water is so warm - love it!

We're sharing a margarita in the pool...
